Ten Easy Steps for Reconditioning Your Fence or Deck

Date Added: August 11, 2007 08:44:58 PM

As the weather gets warmer, we begin to spend more time outdoors. The best part of having a yard is enjoying it during these months, but when items in your yard such as your deck and fence look worn and drab, it takes away from the pleasure.

Now is a good time to check the condition of your wooden privacy fence or deck so you get the most enjoyment during the warm season. The harsh winter weather, ice, rain and even sunlight can be damaging to your fence and deck. Every two to three years homeowners should assess and recondition these surfaces. Fixing your yard’s fence and deck can seem like an intimidating project, but the good news is with a little work and the right tools you can restore your fence and make it look great again.

Here are ten simple steps to protect your fence and deck:

1) Trim back any grass, weeds, trees or brushes that are in contact with the fence and deck. This exposes all of the material and ensures you will get a clean finish.

2) Repair or replace any rotted or damaged wood. Also, it is a good time to check to see if any nails or screws need to be driven back into the fence and deck.

3) Remove any splinters or peeling paint with for smooth the surface.

4) Clean the wood surface with detergent and water. You can use a pressure washer or a brush and a hose. Check for mold and mildew. If it is visible, remove it with a bleach and water solution.

5) Let your fence dry for 24 to 48 hours prior to painting. This allows time for the wood to dry and the surface to be in the best condition for the paint to adhere.

6) Cover plants, flowers, grass and bushes with a drop cloth. Be sure to wear appropriate paint attire.

7) Pour stain or sealer into a Control Spray. A sprayer is great for outdoor projects because its variable flow trigger is easy to use and you’re sure to get great coverage.

8) Start at the top of the fence and work your way down. For best results and to avoid drips, always have your hand in motion before pulling the trigger and release the trigger at the end of each row. Keep the sprayer about 10 to12-inches away from the surface. Check for drips and even coverage.

9) Clean up the sprayer and put away any unused stain or sealer. Remove drip cloths on bushes once stain is dry enough so that dripping is not a worry. Stain is completely dry once it feels dry to the touch. If it feels sticky it still needs more time.

10) Remember to keep safety in mind during any home project and always wear protective eye glasses and a mask when spraying paint.

By following these simple steps, your deck and fence will look new in no time and you can enjoy the beautiful weather to the fullest.
